❤️ When do you feel loved? What is love, anyway?❤️

The third-grade class of Grundschule Wallenbaum explored, together with art educator Saskia Riedel, what love is made of. Through various active, participatory formats and playful approaches, the children experienced a wide range of ideas related to respect, affection, self-love, communication, care, recognition, commitment, and trust.

Starting from different ideas about what love could be, Saskia Riedel also drew on a book by Bell Hooks (1952–2021). In All About Love – New Visions, the US author and literary scholar describes love as something active: being kind, fair, and honest is part of it. Love is not simply something that just exists—we have to learn how to love.

The students’ questions, which are now displayed in the illuminated light boxes, emerged from this work with Saskia Riedel both at school and during a visit to the Stadtgalerie in spring 2026. The design was created by Hannes Brischke.

The Stadtgalerie sees itself as an open space for a wide audience – and as a place where children and young people actively take on responsibility. Like in the exhibition series “…curated by children & young people,” they also act here as co-creators: they shape their city of Saarbrücken and the Stadtgalerie with their own ideas and perspectives.

Since April 2021, artistic director Katharina Ritter has been developing the Stadtgalerie into a place of critical confidence. This means collectively reflecting on desirable futures and working toward more sustainable and fairer developments in all areas of life.

The art education program at the Stadtgalerie is intergenerational and diverse. In collaboration with various partners, educational offerings are created for both school-based and extracurricular contexts.

The project in the light boxes is a collaboration of the Cultural Office of the state capital Saarbrücken—represented by the Stadtgalerie Saarbrücken and the Schulkultur team within the Network for Cultural Education. It was initiated by Katharina Ritter, M.A., co-organized by Lisa Blum, and realized together with Grundschule Wallenbaum and art educator Saskia Riedel.
