SaarART 2023

Contemporary art from Saarland, Luxembourg and Lorraine in 11 Saarland exhibition venues! On the 16th of June, in the year of the Élysée 2023, the multifaceted exhibition SaarART 2023 - Au rendez-vous des amis - opened in Saarbrücken.

As part of the Élysée Year 2023 and under the motto Au rendez-vous des amis, SaarART 2023 will be organised for the first time as a cross-border art project.

From 16 June to 17 September 2023, it will be on show at 11 art venues in Saarland.

The Stadtgalerie Saarbrücken focuses on our view of nature - or our individual experiences of what we call nature. The following artistic positions are presented here:

Saarart Noesen - Felix Krebs

Suzan Noesen

In her video installation Obsolete Terrain, Suzan Noesen (L) questions our position in this ecological structure and puts our image of ourselves up for debate.

Saarart Loos - Felix Krebs

Vera Loos

Vera Loos (D) reflects this atmosphere in her large-format paintings and confronts us with the absurdity of our existence in the open space of lonely landscapes in which we as humans are in danger of getting lost.

Saarart Moritz - Felix Krebs

Margaux Moritz

Margaux Moritz (F) captures this feeling of isolation and exposure in a small sculpture of a house that ironically represents security.

Saarart Wien - Felix Krebs

Christiane Wien

Christiane Wien (D), on the other hand, deals with the specific identity of a space in her sound sculptures and makes it the subject of an encounter encompassing all the senses.

Arthur Debert

The project Transporter by Arthur Debert (F) deals with the cycle of technology and knowledge. These narratives revolve around questions of personal integrity, but also around narratives of national identity and their constructions.

Ephemerality and beauty are the preoccupations of video artist François Schwamborn (D), whose work Cyclone uses aesthetic means to explore the majesty and profound significance of water.

The exhibition, curated by Dr. Andrea Jahn (head of art and cultural studies at the Foundation of Saarland Cultural Heritage), looks beyond Saarland for the first time and presents not only Saarland artists, but also artists from Lorraine and Luxembourg.

A three-member jury from Saarbrücken, Metz and Luxembourg selected 62 artistic positions from more than 200 applications that address specific themes. The examination of "identity", "isolation" and "transience" was a particular focus of artistic attention in the years of the pandemic. Combined with a critical look at the definition and construction of "beauty", it forms the framework of an exhibition, which will develop its own character at each of the participating institutions - with numerous site-specific works and installations.

Exhibition spaces include: In Saarbrücken the Modern Gallery of the Saarlandmuseum, the Stadtgalerie, the Saarländische Künstlerhaus, the KuBa / Kulturzentrum am Eurobahnhof, in Saarlouis the Institut für aktuelle Kunst im Saarland and the Ludwig Galerie. Furthermore the Städische Galerie Neunkirchen, the Museum St. Wendel, the cultural heritage site Völklinger Hütte, the Museum Schloss Fellenberg in Merzig and the Saarländische Galerie – Europäisches Kulturforum in Berlin.
