With the most recent works by Paul Morrison (b. 1966 in Liverpool), the focus at the beginning of this new year of exhibitions is on current painting from the United Kingdom.

Morrison’s wall-sized black-and-white landscape panoramas and series of paintings attracted international attention already in the 1990s and are represented in renowned collections such as the Museum of Modern Art in New York; the Städel Museum in Frankfurt; and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

His gardens and landscapes laid out with bold lines unfold in spacious wall paintings as well as on canvas, drawings, prints, and films. Morrison consciously works with the shift in scales and draws his inspiration from historical etchings, botanical illustrations, comics, animations, and the Internet. And so his plant images, which resemble cut-outs, appear as oversized metal sculptures.

In his latest works, too, Morrison seeks to engage with these visual worlds and relates them to the architecture of the exhibition space. For the Stadtgalerie he will develop a new wall painting defining the space and taking up the character of the Baroque urban palace to turn it into the uncanny and fantastic. Another focus lies on a new series of monochrome paintings that are being presented for the first time in this exhibition.

With this extensive selection of Morrison’s most recent paintings and sculptural works, the Stadtgalerie Saarbrücken is presenting the Englishman’s first solo exhibition in a German institution since 2002.
