Heribert Friedl - Takehito Koganezawa

Mid-February our exhibition program begins with the presentation of two very different artistic stances, both of which are directly related to the spatial environment of the Stadtgalerie.

On the first exhibition level, the installations of the Austrian artist Heribert Friedl (*1969 in Feldbach/Steiermark) will be displayed. Radically reduced works take a central position in his oeuvre. They hover along the border of visual perceptibility. At the heart of these nonvisualobjects is the interactive effect of smell, particularly in the location-dependent wall installation thematizing the history of Saarbrücken and its present-day reality. A second sculptural installation make up of discarded clothing also takes up the issue of smell and broadens the topic to a stance of social engagement.

On the upper level, the multi-media art of the Japanese artist Takehito Koganezawa (*1974 in Tokyo) sets a very different accent. As a draftsman, video artist, and performer, Koganezawa develops image-sound-installations that emerge out of the dynamics of his hands or body in order to – with the help of video projectors and cameras – make time visible as movement. In the flow of these images a downright painterly aesthetic evolves that in the interplay with soundtracks composed by the artist allows the creation of a distinctive image-sound tapestry. The artist has extended these abstract video works with his most recent installation, Other Person’s Shoe, in which for the first time he reflects upon politically charged issues and focuses on the problematic reporting surrounding the IS and its international kidnappings.

Heribert Friedl completed his studies with honors at the University of Applied Arts in Vienna in 1998 and since then has taken part in many group and solo exhibitions at the international level.

After completing his studies at the renowned Musashino Art University in Tokyo, Koganezawa came to Berlin where he has lived and worked since 1999.
