St. Johanner Markt Raum

Relax, play, or simply do nothing: the Stadtgalerie Saarbrücken has created a consumption-free space for young people and families on the first floor (from 1 May)

A new place to arrive, connect, and spend time is taking shape in the heart of downtown Saarbrücken: with the St. Johanner Markt Raum, Stadtgalerie Saarbrücken is expanding its offer with an openly accessible meeting place – deliberately free from any obligation to make a purchase.

Situated among exhibitions and artworks, the newly designed area invites young people and families in particular to spend time together. Large-scale elements reminiscent of oversized building blocks create an informal, playful atmosphere, whether or not visitors are attending an exhibition.

"Are you out and about in the city and feel like taking a little break with your friends or family? Then why not drop by! Here, you can not only experience art through our special exhibitions. You can play, let off steam, or simply do nothing for a while and unwind," says Katharina Ritter, Artistic Director of Stadtgalerie Saarbrücken.

The new St. Johanner Markt Raum is conceived as a prototype for an expanded urban infrastructure: a place that combines cultural participation with social functions. The programme is complemented by regular free workshops connected to the current exhibitions, inviting visitors to engage actively with art.

With this initiative, Stadtgalerie Saarbrücken is responding to the growing need for freely accessible, non-commercial spaces to spend time in urban environments — in particular for young people.
