Alexander Hoffmann – alias Retro23 – refuses rationality. He has little interest in the kind of knowledge that claims to be unequivocal: he is drawn instead to what is raw, real, and human.

The Saarbrücken-based artist understands his painting as a counter-model to the thinking and planning of everyday life, namely as a visual and tactile exploration and investigation. Highly emotional, he immerses himself in fantastical narratives and creates his own works, influenced by the psychedelic world and by nature.

He creates a cosmos that invites everyone to wander. While we are still trying to follow his stories, they are already becoming our own, held together by colours that seem to suggest that everything is actually clear and tangible.

On his canvases, Retro23 plays with open spaces of energies, themes, and temporalities. Like a diary entry, everything begins in the everyday, blending with influences from music, books, news, contemporary art, or memes. He catalyzes emotional states and visualizes personal passions, creating new connections and making the hidden visible.

In his first institutional solo exhibition, DIE DACHSE KOMMEN NÄHER, the graduate communication designer shares a journey that is free to go anywhere. His paintings and ceramics provide the best maps for it.
